In this post I will be explaining what steampunk is. So many people don't know or understand this concept so I will be showing you how you would know if something is steampunk. Lets start with clothes.
Steampunk clothing consists of Top hats, corsets, waistcoats, pocket watches, bustles, and monocles among other things. I know what your thinking that is clothing from the Victorian era. Well you would be right steampunk is based on the Victorian era except that everything works with steam, clockwork, cogs, boilers, and gears. Goggles are one thing that differentiates steampunk from the Victorian era. This is because in the steampunk world a lot of the people would be working as boiler operators and they would be working with fire, hot water, and grease and you wouldn't want to be sprayed in the eyes.
Now about decor there are a couple of animals that are commonly used on clothes and to decorate these are Octopuses, owls, wolves, dragons, and crows. If you where to decorate steampunk style you would use a lot of leather, velvet, silk, and a lot of heavy durable materials. You would use dark colors like a rich red, deep purple, different shades of brown and black. This kind of thing is quite hard to describe so here are some pictures.
You might have noticed that hot air balloons and zeppelins(blimps, airships) are often used with steampunk decor. In the steampunk world this is the way people get around rather than in ships that sail on the ocean. You will often hear terms like airship pirates or sky captains and if you got into steampunk these would be job options.
